When I went home to visit, I saw this shirt that my dad recently got. It goes along with Turkle's "Alone Together". It uses a 'funny tshirt' to show the evolution of man into cyborg. It does seem like, at the rate technology is becoming more integrated into our lives, we will eventually completely be replaced by robots. Turkle writes about the companions that will not disapoint people- the robotic companions that give unconditional affection, catering to people's narcissism. We want relationships that will not fail, pets that will not make a mess, toys that can be reset if we mess up when we are teaching them.I personally would rather have a two sided relationship the 'old fashioned way'.

Its crazy to think about that some day our kids will be surronded by robots when we are experiencing the making and changing of the generation to come.
ReplyDeleteThis image is actually very true, but very scary at the same time. I hope that humans will remain humans, so that our world is not run by robots without any feelings or actual comprehension of human beings.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, I do not want the world run by robots without feeling... but isn't that kind of what society is shooting for when they try to eliminate all personal bias and elect leaders that will simply enforce the rules? Not everything that leaders enforce is influenced by personal opinion, so in a way, we are already there... todays society is already manufacturing generation after generation of brainwashed 'robots'. People, leaders and the general population, are becoming emotionless robots living the way society says we should. Its a scary thought really. Our lives and personal opinions are, over the years, gradually losing value and power in the grand scheme of things. What happens when are lives are valued so little that we are simply pawns in someones sadistic chess game?
DeletePeople don't want to be hurt so they will do anything to prevent it. I think a relationship with a robot is a little extreme but people will go to all lengths not to have to feel despair.
